Blair - New York Alternative Punk.
When deciding which bands to review for our first blog posts, Blair was a must. This up and coming New York-based band is undoubtedly going to make it big in the indie scene, and I predict that it won’t take them too long. Luckily for me, I found them while they were at only 500 Spotify listeners. Over the course of the past two weeks, they have quickly jumped to 3,000+ listeners with only a 3-track EP being released thus far. The EP was released on Bandcamp in March of 2019, and on other streaming platforms in April, comprising of three songs titled: Day One Homies, On and Off, and Remember. Day One Homies currently reigning most popular with 17,500 plays on Spotify. I’ve dug my way around the web trying to find some forms of social media for the group..unfortunately, there is just about nothing out there (yet).
From their self titled EP, the song that stands out the most to me is On and Off. The song is about on and off relationships, and while there are plenty of songs written about that topic this one is especially hard-hitting due to its spoken-word intro. The group puts out such raw emotion that you can truly feel through the recording(s) as if they were performing it right there in front of you. That is a hard thing to achieve, especially when it comes to heavier punk rock music..even more so when it’s lo-fidelity.
Blair is definitely a good fit for anyone who enjoys bands like Forth Wanderers, Diet Cig, or anything that falls under the genres of lo-fi, punk, and alternative rock. Each song is supported with crunchy guitar, luscious piano solos, crash-heavy drums, and distorted vocals. The angst within the instrumentation is equally matched within the blunt lyrics. There isn’t much sugar coating going on in these songs, just pure feelings put to music.
I’m intrigued to hear what’s next for this group and to learn some more about them. Hopefully, the wait isn’t much longer.
